A noise emanated from a door beyond a run down holotape player, and Heather was the first to run back toward the dumbwaiter, Signal transfixed and too terrified to move until the door creaked. In a minute they were up and out into the empty cafeteria, panting breathlessly and heading for the lab.

“I think I’m gonna be sick” Signal said as they neared. “Heather, who would do something like that? All those animals…”

“I don’t know” she said, trying to remain calm. “But whoever it is, they aren’t right in the head. Like my pa, or Dr. Klimson’s brother. I think after animals comes people usually. That’s how killers start.”

“So what do we do?”

“We’ll just tell Carol or Harrison” she said, looking over her shoulder periodically to make sure they weren’t being followed.

The day was getting late and Harrison and the Major would be departing soon. In the lab, they found Carol sitting next to a pile of papers, mumbling formulas to herself before realizing she had company and beginning angrily before smiling and asking the pair what they wanted.

“I’m very busy” Carol said, trying not to sound dismissive. “Is there something you’d like to tell me or that you need help with?”

Signal looked at Heather shyly, biting his lip and fidgeting and she sighed before explaining what they had found in the basement. In the room beneath the cellar.

“You’re sure?” Carol asked warily. “You two aren’t trying to play a game? Because if you’re telling me there’s an animal torture dungeon beneath the cafeteria, that’s not a very funny joke.”

“We wouldn’t joke” Signal said, looking at her reproachfully. “I followed the cat and then someone killed him, like she said. And then Heather found the basement room and it was awful, like she told you. Why don’t you believe me?”

“I’m not saying I don’t…” Carol began, searching for Harrison in her directory and paging him on her com system. “Look, all I know is kids sometimes have a weird sense of humor. If you really saw something, I need to let Harrison know so he can tell the Major. He’ll want to have someone check it out while they’re headed for Columbus.”

Signal and Heather nodded solemnly, walking out of the lab and back towards their cabin and leaving Carol stunned, breaking out in goose flesh and lighting a cigarette as the door closed. The communications array pinged Harrison’s radio in the Hangar bay, and he turned off the plasma torch and and lifted his visor, reading the name on the monitor and answering jovially.

“Care” Harrison said, climbing down from the plane’s wing and hanging up his gloves. “How’s it going? Read any good books lately?”

“Ha ha” she replied sarcastically. “Funny guy. Look, Heather and Signal just told me some pretty freaky shit and I think you and the major better have a talk.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yes, Harry” she said, sighing. “Is he there with you?”

“Yup, he’s right here” Harrison said, letting the Major in on their coms channel. “What is it?”

“Major” Carol began, pausing to think about how to phrase what she had been told.
